International Collaboration Beyond the Culture Gap

It was at the 9th meeting in Toronto that I got the chance to start international collaboration. Prof. Rydevik and I presented papers in the symposium called "Pain and Nerve Root," chaired by Dr. Tile. This meeting linked us through our common interest on nerve roots.
I told my young colleagues the importance for us Japanese to study in different civilizations and started to send a fellow to the Orthopaedic Department of Gothenburg University in 1992. Prof. Rydevik, Prof. Olmarker, Lab.director Larsson and Prof. Hansson have kindly supervised these students.
This long-term collaboration was recognized and I received the degree of Honorary Doctor at Gothenburg University in 2003 with recommendation by Prof. Nachemson, Prof. Rydevik, Prof. Olmarker and Prof.Hansson.
I have sent 13 fellows to Gothenburg University and they have learned a lot. Now they are good orthopaedic surgeons. Their experience in Gothenburg University is a great treasure in their lives and for our department.
Prof. Nachemson has often visited my department and given us good suggestions for our research. He has advised me not only about research but also about my life. When I became a professor and chairman, he told me his experience and gave such advices as in the slide. Last year he came to Fukushima to celebrate the 15th anniversary of my professorship. This is the picture at the party. What he had in his hand is not the literature of EBM, but the label of a good wine.
Our collaboration with Gothenburg University has brought much success and it is still continuing. This is the summary of the results up to now. They are accustomed to my poor English now. When I try to ask a question, they answer without hearing my question to the end. Their answer is just what I want to know, and sometimes more.
I met Prof. Myers from the University of California San Diego, through exchange with Prof. Rydevik. I was fascinated by his good personality and high level of research technique, and asked him to accept my young colleagues. I have sent seven fellows to his department since 1997.
This is the summary of our collaboration. Unfortunately no babies. As a result of our collaboration study, we received the Volvo Award in 2000 and the ISSLS Prize in 2003.
When the sun sets in Fukushima, they start to work in Gothenburg and when they finish the day's work, research is started in San Diego. Our research is going on 24 hours a day at some place in the world. The collaboration has made a difference in our research. I have acknowledged the importance of collaboration beyond interdisciplinary and national borders.
Collaboration research has made our paper presentations at ISSLS increase a lot. We report some result of international collaboration every year.
